MLC Estates LLP believes social transformation is possible when resources are shared to
improve lives of those who have little, or no access, to education, skills training, and
entrepreneurship support.
The company demonstrates its commitment to development, and supports the remote villages of Uttara Kannada district, in Haliyal Taluk. MLC Estates LLP has embarked on this mission with NGO partner, CherYsh.
CherYsh Trust is a registered nonprofit organisation that strives to enhance learning avenues for girl children, and livelihood opportunities for resource-poor women in rural India.
The CherYsh approach underlines the importance of women as leaders of change in their communities; it underscores the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement in delivering on development goals; and it assigns great importance to shared value amongst communities, government and business.
CherYsh also believes better futures for rural resource-poor women will be sustainable through robust use of data generated at the grassroots. By leveraging this data we aim to deliver services better, and on larger scale.
20 villages, 500 women, and 320 children will benefit from the introduction of Skill Circles, and Knowledge Hubs in rural Karnataka and Goa over 2013-15.
CherYsh Shikshana Vikas Kendras, Haliyal
In Haliyal Taluk, the Shikshana Vikas Kendras (CherYsh Learning Centres) are located in the village neighbourhood. The Centres target all-round development of children through quality education, life skills and nutrition. In each village educated young women play the role of Learning Facilitators at the Centre.
In these neighbourhood learning centres CherYsh reaches 500 children. This number has gradually grown from the 270 a year ago. Increased self-confidence amongst the children is clearly visible. Children were earlier shy and awkward, and speaking up was not easy! This has given way to newfound poise and determination.
CherYsh Community Kitchens, Haliyal
Health Care Attendant Course, Ponda, Goa
In January 2013, CherYsh-KDDC helped the women in Haliyal set up community kitchens in two villages: Bukkinkoppa and Haliyal. Two self- help groups of 10 women each are in charge of the kitchens. For the women, the enterprise is a practical lesson in business and economics. They manage the orders, supplies, storage and distribution. The kitchens are equipped with eco- friendly smoke-free stoves donated by CherYsh. Nutritious snacks are prepared in these kitchens, which goes out to the Shikshana Vikas Kendras to provide nutritional support to the children. Efforts are on, with the help of experts from the hotel industry to increase the nutritional contents of the snacks with locally available raw materials in flavours appealing to local palate. Hotel Gateway Lakeside – Hubbali is helping out the community kitchens in this regard.
The Health Care Assistant Course in Ponda was initiated with the objective of enabling rural girls, especially those hailing from poor socio-economic backgrounds, to take their first step towards professional education. Through intense advocacy measures with the Govt. of Goa, the Dept. of Education approved the two-year course. The girls who complete the course will be certified as Professional Health Care Assistants. The job opportunities in the sector are significant with launch of new hospitals, nursing homes and old age homes. Further, this will make their journey towards higher professional qualifications in nursing field much easier. The course, which started with 19 girls, now boasts of strength of 50 students in two batches.
